Types of Moving Services

Relocation

This is the type of moving service most people think of when they think about moving. This is a moving service that packs up and loads all of your household goods into a moving trailer and transports them to your new home. A relocation move usually refers to moving long-distance, out of one state and into a new one. It is standard to be charged a rate per pound, so your cost would be based on the weight of your shipment.

Local Move

This refers to moving within the city that you live in, typically a short distance up to approximately 90 miles. This service is normally charged by the hour. Each state has its own rules and regulations about how local moves are handled.

Small Move

“Shared Load,” “Partial Load,” “Estate Move,” “Less than Load,” “Mini Move,” etc.… This normally refers to a long-distance move (moving from one state to another) and would normally be two rooms worth of furniture or less. It could even be as small as a dining table or a recliner chair. This type of service usually has longer pick-up and delivery times compared to a relocation move.

The advantage of this type of service (at least with Sterling Van Lines) is that you only get charged for what you have. It is typical in the moving industry to charge customers for a minimum of 2,000 to 3,000 lbs, or sometimes, a minimum of 1,000 lbs. Sterling Van Lines has a minimum of 400 lbs. This saves you money. If you are flexible regarding pick-up and delivery times, this is the best use of your money.

Packaged Freight

This type of service is done by collecting your goods and stacking them on a pallet or putting them in a container and sending them via freight truck to your destination. This is the type of thing that UPS or FedEx does. While this type of move is sometimes faster, your goods are not handled by a mover. There is not the same attention to personal care and protection of your items with this type of move.
