College Move

Wrapping up a year of college can be a bittersweet time. On one hand, you’re able to finally put aside the rigors of studying and enjoy some rest and relaxation with your friends and family back home. On the other, you’ll need to pack up all of your belongings and memories from the recent school year, too. Read on to learn more about five helpful tips that will make the process much simpler.

  1. Make Time To Clean

Don’t wait until the very last second to complete a halfhearted cleaning job, be sure to provide yourself with plenty of time to get the job done before leaving. Otherwise, you could end up receiving a hefty surcharge from your landlord or the university for not properly picking up the area. Ask your housing provider for a list of directions and areas to clean during the early stages of the process.

  2. Sell Your Books

If you are taking your books home with you, not only are you giving yourself a much heavier load to carry, but you are also depriving yourself of some extra folding money. Most colleges and universities provide you with an opportunity to cash in your used schoolbooks and make your packing life much easier. Do you have papers that you’re particularly proud of? Save them digitally as a means of creating extra space.

  3. Eat All Your Food

Another common issue that college students face is the proper disposal of food. There is no reason to leave any food behind when you take off and students who fail to properly dispose of theirs are made to pay sizable fines when rodents and insects begin to make their summer home in their dorm or apartment. Food, drinks and trash must be thrown away in a timely fashion.

  4. Make Donations

There is a very good chance that you have items that have seen better days and these items should be set aside and placed in a donation pile. Campuses typically set up donation areas at the end of a semester for students who are looking to save time, so be sure to utilize these drop off points whenever possible. You can also speak to friends and see if there is anything of yours that they would like to call dibs on.

  5. Get Help if Needed

This is especially true for students who will be receiving a ride back home with their parents. Don’t wait until the last minute to start packing and start boxing up winter gear and all the clothes you won’t need during finals week. Research and obtain movers if you need extra help. Make sure they are professional, licensed, and insured. You may want to consider getting a storage unit for stuff that you can’t bring with you but may need it in a later date.
